YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT! I can’t stress this enough. You’re not going to lose any weight if you don’t take a look, and then another look, at you’re diet. You can do cardio & lift weights every single day and you will still struggle with losing weight…in fact, you’ll probably gain weight (muscle weighs a lot more than fat)! I struggled with this concept for YEARS. I would do cardio or P90X every single day (which last 1 hour+ if you aren’t familiar with the program), and literally gain weight. It was SO FRUSTRATING.
If you haven’t heard of paleo or keto, then you must be living underneath a rock! I’m not going to go into tremendous detail about each of these diets because there is extensive research across the internet that explains both better than I ever could. But in short, Paleo is a nutrient focused whole foods diet, with a mind-set & goal to maximize foods that heal your body and minimize the foods that are harmful & cause inflammation. This style of eating improves health by providing balanced and complete nutrition, while avoiding most processed and refined foods and empty excess calories. It’s not simply a way to lose pounds quickly (although MOST people do!), and it’s not a diet, per se…it is a lifestyle that is rooted solidly in latest research. If you’re interested in a deeper understanding, I’d recommend the books below…I’ve read several books on both and these are the best! I’d REALLY recommend you read at least 1 of them 🙂
In my experience, THE WHOLE 30 was a turning point in my life as far as health and nutrition. Tony and I were living in Singapore (this was about 7 years ago prior to our 2 boys), and to be completely honest, EVERYTHING was excessive and over the top…brunches, restaurants, the night life, the hotels etc. It was hard to feel grounded because everything was just so unrealistic. A glass of wine was $25, a burger was $35, our Anniversary dinner one year was $950.00! Are you kidding me! We were going out 3+ times during the week and always on the weekends, staying out late, and of course drinking was always in the cards. My body felt absolutely terrible, I was bloated, and got to a point that I just couldn’t stand it anymore. The Whole 30 taught me SO much about food, my body, and the power of my mind; it explained to me why so many of us are plagued with excess pounds, inflammation, and discomfort.
The Whole 30 is all about EATING. REAL. FOOD. The premise is to “Eat moderate portions of meat, seafood, and eggs; lots of vegetables; some fruit; plenty of natural fats; and herbs, spices, and seasonings. Eat foods with very few ingredients, preferably no ingredients listed at all because they’re whole and unprocessed.”
We are not on this planet for long and who wants to spend that precious time worrying about weight or doing cardio until your face turns blue? Take the time to get to know your body, what your current relationship is with food, and how certain food groups make you feel. You should not think of this as a diet, but more of a lifestyle change. I’ll talk about some crash course diets (I think it’s the post after next) if you’re looking to lose weight immediately, but if you don’t understand this concept, then I promise you will be forever running around and around on the hamster wheel frustrated! The human body is not generic, and you’ve got to understand YOUR body type.
If I can prevent anyone else from making the same diet and exercise mistakes I did, then me writing this is worth my time. You’re not only taking time away from what you really want to be doing, but you’re also harming your body; your body NEEDS rest days! When I finally grasped this concept, it was like I got my life back. Now, when I workout, it’s not because I feel like I have to, it’s because I have the energy and I’m excited about the endorphins and the energy I get back when I’m finished. Everyone’s body is unique and if you don’t listen to your body, it will FORCE you to listen in one way or another (from personal experience, TRUST ME!). If you learn to be kind to your body and listen, it will be kind to you!
